AI helped me not only write my resume but also practice for job interviews. It organized information about the jobs and companies I applied to, enabling me to prepare clear answers to possible interview questions.

Preparing Beyond the Resume with AI.

AI gave me valuable insights from different sources, making me feel more ready for interviews. I believe interviews are a chance to show who I am beyond my work experience. It’s also an opportunity to explain why I’m the right person for the job. By using AI, I organized my thoughts, prepared strong answers, and used the right words to express myself clearly during interviews.

After applying for jobs, I used AI tools like ChatGPT to identify key points, such as how my skills align with the position I’m pursuing. It helped me create answers that highlight my experience and personal qualities. I also used it to understand the company’s industry, allowing me to adjust my tone and language. AI even generated potential interview questions, which helped me craft a script to practice different scenarios.

Improving My English with Tabbi Talk.

Since English is my second language, I know I make mistakes, especially in important situations like interviews. Being in a multicultural environment reminds me that many people speak English as a second language. To improve, I use Tabbi Talk, a tool that lets me record myself for two minutes, checks my pronunciation, and corrects mistakes. It also suggests better words or phrases for my script, helping me communicate more clearly and professionally.

Practicing the STAR Technique with AI.

When preparing for interviews, I use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) with the help of Tabbi AI and ChatGPT. These tools help me find examples of past work to discuss in interviews. For instance, I explain how I managed candidate searches for customer service roles, created selection filters, and improved the hiring process. I also share measurable results, such as reducing hiring time and increasing employee retention.

After finalizing my script, I practice using video tools to observe my body language and manage nerves, especially when interviewing in my second language.

AI: A Game-Changer for My Interview Preparation.

AI has transformed how I prepare for job interviews. From crafting a strong resume to practicing clear answers, these tools helped me organize my thoughts and focus on what’s important. They improved my English, corrected my pronunciation, and boosted my confidence in expressing myself effectively.

Thanks to AI, I feel more prepared and confident in showcasing how my skills and experience match the role. These tools turned my weaknesses into strengths and gave me the confidence to succeed in any interview.

My name is Dani, and I’m a marketing intern at Tabbi. I am a Latina woman who decided to become an international student in the Bay Area. Ever since I completed my undergraduate degree, I’d planned to pursue a master’s degree abroad in a new language. After a few years of working, I finally started researching universities and countries for study opportunities and discovered a master’s program in leadership in San Francisco.

Navigating the Challenges of Studying Abroad

Upon arriving in San Francisco, I encountered a world of challenges as an international student and non-native English speaker. I needed tools to help with my academic and work responsibilities, and that’s when I discovered Tabbi—an AI tool designed to support non-native speakers in their learning and improve English usage in daily activities.

First Encounters with Tabbi AI

At first, I used Tabbi to make my university assignments more eloquent. As I explored the tool, I realized Tabbi offers various features that enhanced my experience as a second-language learner. One of my earliest positive experiences with Tabbi was realizing that it doesn’t just correct grammar—it provides meaningful feedback, helping me learn from my common mistakes and refine my written and verbal communication.

Enhancing Communication with Different Styles

With a formal English background and a limited vocabulary, I found Tabbi’s range of correction styles especially helpful. One style I used frequently was "eloquent correction," which improves filler words and reduces repetitiveness while flagging grammatical or spelling errors. This feature has been invaluable in refining my academic writing.

Using AI to Build a Job-Ready Resume

When it was time to job hunt, Tabbi became an essential tool in building my resume. Starting with a CV in Spanish, I used Tabbi’s "translator" style, which accurately translates while preserving the intent of the information. For finalizing my resume, I relied on the "resume bullet points" style, which condenses content to fit a one-page format. Tabbi also helped me tailor my resume for different job applications, adapting my experience to each specific job description.

Streamlining Communication with Email Assistance

Tabbi’s email writing assistance has also been incredibly useful. The AI-generated titles and organized email body improve the clarity of my communications, making it easier to receive clear responses from recipients. This feature has helped me establish more professional and precise communication with potential employers and colleagues.

Maximizing Learning with Tabbi's History and Challenges

Tabbi’s "history" feature allows me to track past interactions, making it easy to review specific corrections and lessons. I can highlight and underline information to help reinforce my learning. An additional feature I value is the "Diff" function, which shows my errors alongside Tabbi’s corrections, enhancing my understanding of grammatical and semantic improvements.

Engaging with Community Challenges

A standout feature of Tabbi is the community challenges. These challenges not only create a space for user interaction but also offer continual opportunities to improve English. The topics range from image descriptions to gratitude journaling, allowing open self-expression while learning.

Conclusion: How AI Transformed My Academic and Career Growth

The use of artificial intelligence has transformed my academic journey and professional development. Tools like Tabbi have enabled me to utilize a variety of resources within one application, saving time and providing meaningful feedback. Tabbi has become more than just a tool—it’s a support system that has made my transition from student to job market-ready smoother and more rewarding.

I asked about their motivation for learning English, why they think Tabbi is better than other apps, and their personal tips for learning English.

For our first interview, we have Pilgong, a longtime blog acquaintance of mine and a current Tabbi Plus user.

The idea for this interview series came to me while chatting with Pilgong. She showed incredible willpower by completing the 100-day English diary challenge when I ran the ChattingCat business. When we first met, she was living in Korea, and now it's been 10 years since she moved to Canada. Her dedication to daily English study is a great inspiration to me.

So, I asked her, "I've been curious for a long time, what is your motivation for studying English? What is the source of your passion?" And she answered:

Studying English? I think it's a way to boost my self-esteem. Honestly, it's hard to become like a native speaker, but if you don't do anything and still can't do it, your self-esteem suffers... but if you work hard, you can say you are making progress even though there is a limit.

As a fellow immigrant, I totally understand and feel motivated by her words. That's why I thought, "I need to share this story with other Tabbi fans.”

April: Can you introduce yourself and share a bit about your background and interests?

Pilgong: Absolutely! I’ve been living in Canada for 10 years, raising two kids, and running a blog (https://blog.naver.com/peripanu) under the nickname Pilgong. Alongside my husband, I manage a business. I have diverse interests, especially in English learning, which includes watching Netflix shows, writing reviews, and reading or listening to English books.

April: How did you discover Tabbi, and why do you use it?

Pilgong: I first came across Tabbi’s founder, April Kim, through her service ChattingCat about 8 years ago. It provided real-time English corrections, which was incredibly helpful. When the service closed, I was quite disappointed. Later on, I joined Tabbi as a beta tester, giving feedback to improve the service. It was great to be part of something so useful and see it evolve.

April: What motivates you to learn English, and what are your goals?

Pilgong: Before moving to Canada, my English was quite poor. Working in Seoul gave me the opportunity to interact with foreign friends, which motivated me to study English. I joined an English study group, which was challenging but essential. Writing became my main focus because my teacher emphasized its importance for speaking skills. Even after 10 years of study, English is still tough for me, but I believe consistent effort is key. Practicing writing and correcting errors through Tabbi has been very helpful. Persistence in language learning, like daily practice, is crucial.

April: How does Tabbi compare to other apps and methods you’ve tried?

Pilgong: Tabbi stands out for several reasons. It offers a correction history, tailored feedback for writing and speaking, and a red pen function for checking mistakes. It’s easy to review and improve the highlighted parts. These features make it more effective than other apps I’ve tried.

April: What advice would you give to others looking to improve their English skills?

Pilgong: I recommend watching English TV shows and reality shows with dual subtitles. It’s important to put what you learn into practice. I write 400-character summaries of episodes, get them corrected, and practice those expressions. This method combines both input and output, which is very effective.

I hope the interview with Pilgong was as inspirational to you as it was to me. You can visit her blog to see her posts about her daily efforts to improve her English.

For a non-native speaker like me, at predominantly English-speaking workplaces, linguistic barriers have felt insurmountable. Furthermore, a diverse workplace makes clear and effective communication even more important. Whew!

But I’m here to reassure you that the world has changed. The challenges are still real, but they can be conquered. Tools exist to help you be yourself at work, confident that your ideas will be understood and respected.

Challenges Faced by Non-native Speakers

Professional work is not easy. Every employee is expected to perform at high levels and demonstrate competence in skills both technical and organizational – using language. Navigating the workplace as a non-native speaker comes with an added set of challenges, like deciphering complex new business terms and understanding cultural nuances in communication. These barriers can lead to misunderstanding, decreased participation in meetings, and potential loss of confidence. How depressing to know you’re not performing at your best!

Enter AI. New language models have suddenly emerged to revolutionize how non-native speakers can navigate the workplace. These tools arrived so recently yet, wonderfully, they are now available to everyone. Once-fictional technologies like real-time translation, spoken language transcription, and personalized language feedback transform the professional landscape. Using these tools is no longer an option for a non-native speaker (or actually for anyone.) They level the playing field by substantially raising it.

AI-Driven Writing Assistance

In particular, AI has uplifted the value of writing assistance tools like Tabbi AI and Grammarly. These platforms serve as personal editors, identifying grammatical errors, suggesting stylistic improvements, and enhancing message clarity. Feedback allows non-native speakers to focus on their message's content and insights, confidently leaving grammar and style improvements to AI.

For many non-native speakers, the fear of making embarrassing mistakes in professional communications can be overwhelming. AI tools alleviate these fears by providing real-time corrections and suggestions, ensuring communications are both grammatically accurate and stylistically on point. This shift allows individuals to focus more on their ideas and contributions.

Automation of writing correction, editing, and feedback saves time but it also significantly boosts confidence among non-native speakers. By streamlining the editing process, AI enables these individuals to dedicate more energy to productive tasks, enhancing their contribution to the workplace.

Bridging the Communication Gap

AI tools are instrumental in creating a level playing field, ensuring that linguistic barriers do not compromise communication effectiveness. This democratization of language proficiency leads to a more inclusive workplace, where the focus is on the quality of ideas rather than linguistic accuracy.

As a beneficial side effect, AI significantly enables and enhances workplace diversity and inclusion. By smoothing out communication challenges, it creates an environment where all voices, regardless of their linguistic background, are valued and heard, thus enriching the workplace culture.

Future Prospects

The future looks promising as AI continues to evolve, offering even greater support to non-native speakers. This evolution promises a workplace where inclusivity and diversity are not just encouraged but are integral to the organizational culture.

As we applaud amazing advancements brought to workplace communication, we must also consider the challenges of becoming too reliant on these tools. Our next post, "Navigating the Paradox: When AI Assistance in Language Learning Becomes a Comfort Trap," will address the fine line between using AI as a tool and becoming dependent on it. We will explore how this reliance can potentially hinder language skill development and foster a dependency that might prove challenging.

Stay tuned for an insightful discussion on balancing the benefits of AI with the importance of developing true language proficiency.

However, these rapidly evolving tools require thoughtful oversight to maximize benefits and minimize risks.

In this blog, I aim to provide some guidance for fruitful and responsible usage of Large Language Models and chatbots. Specifically, I will highlight application areas where AI-generated text can reliably improve language abilities without distorting a text’s original meaning.

However, unchecked AI output risks factual inaccuracy and loss of user voice. By carefully evaluating results instead of blindly accepting them, we can enjoy productivity gains without impairment. I will share some best practices for guiding systems to generate useful output while avoiding fabricated content.

Why AI Matters to Tabbi

Tabbi was founded to help non-native speakers unlock the same English effectiveness that native speakers have acquired over their lives. We level the playing field so language proficiency does not limit communication and opportunities.

Generative AI offers solutions previously unimaginable. Companies like OpenAI have absorbed staggering amounts of data, even identifying linguistic patterns that elude many humans. For learners struggling with arbitrary rules of grammar or needing to communicate subtle ideas, such assistance can be game-changing.

Generative AI also expands self-directed learning. Learners can practice conversations to polish interpersonal verbal skills. Lacking any human limits, the AI feedback is direct, uninhibited and detailed. Attempts to communicate complex ideas can be practiced and refined alone without embarrassment.

Responsibly applied, AI propels non-native speakers towards expertise exceeding what most previously thought possible.

What Works Well Now

A major shortcoming of generative AI involves fabricating plausible-sounding but false information. Systems like GPT lack mechanisms for verifying factual accuracy. Their training instead optimizes for fluently conforming to patterns in the data.

Fortunately, needs exist where these deficiencies matter less. Generative AI excels at tasks focused on improving and correcting language itself. Here the training data provides sufficient guidance to avoid pure invention. Useful applications include:

Identifying grammar/spelling errors

Improving word choice and phrasing

Condensing writing for brevity

Expanding details in concise writing

Adapting text for different formats and audiences

By constraining the domain to language modification rather than content creation, responsible users can unlock reliable value. With this in mind, Tabbi taps the obvious upside. Output stays grounded in the existing text rather than veering towards unverified claims. When used judiciously, generative AI makes error-free, polished writing possible for anyone.

Unlocking Creativity, But With Caveats

Occasionally, the unpredictability of these tools can be valuable. The sheer breadth of data generative AI digests enables unique insights. By combining concepts and narratives in unprecedented ways, it sparks creativity in a user.

With an open but critical mindset, users can harness unique perspectives from AI to push boundaries. Its capacity to recombine massive inputs drives outside-the-box concepts. However, evaluation responsibilities ultimately rely upon human judgment before pursuing suggestions further.

Effective Ways of Using Generative AI

1. Polish and improve existing text

2. Generate outlines, summaries, and drafts

3. Practice challenging conversations and presentations

Language Polish - Apply Without Hesitation

For pure language refinement of human generated text, AI delivers immense value. Tasks like grammar correction, concise rewriting, paraphrasing, adapting wording, flagging repetition and fixing conventions allow the AI to unlock its pattern-driven talents without risk of misinformation.

The submitted text constrains the output to enhance phrasing and structure while preserving original semantic intent. No factual creation is required. For both native and non-native speakers, rapid feedback accelerates mastery and instills communication confidence. Treat AI here as a tireless editor to amplify impact.

Outlines, Summaries, Drafts - Be Inspired

Requesting AI assistance with productivity writing tasks like outlines, summarizations and rough draft text can boost efficiency. But responsible usage requires reviewing output to prune tangents, validate accuracy and adjust tone for authentic self-expression before sending.

The AI structures and condenses well, but lacks understanding so customize phrasing for your unique needs. Employ the tool’s strengths for suggestions only rather than final submissions.

Conversation Practice - Embrace the Experience

Practicing with another human is the gold standard for communication. But some practice and correction is tedious and tiring; the non-learner is rarely getting much value. Unlike with real people, dialogue with AI systems allows judgment-free rehearsal of planned critical interactions, from interviews to negotiations.

At any level, even for native English speakers, I’d encourage business people to prepare for important meetings using a mock interaction with an AI. The practice sharpens communication skills, and allows the human to react to spontaneous ideas and criticism. You can see and assess the space of perspectives prior to an actual meeting.

Ensuring Your Unique Voice Shines Through

One last major concern is that unfiltered generative AI output can end up feeling generic. Systems lack understanding of a user’s distinctive style, and by their nature choose a tone which is middle-of-the-road and often boring.

Fortunately, users can guide AI to better represent personal voice. Specific anecdotes and vivid sensory details add flair no dataset contains. Seeking creative metaphors and analogies pushes beyond platitudes towards your unique voice. Adding these recognizable human elements counterbalances AI limitations.

Realizing Responsible Generative AI Potential

In closing, breakthrough generative AI absolutely merits the hype yet requires diligent direction to fulfill its potential. Used judiciously, these tools unlock new possibilities. But without conscientious oversight, risks like misinformation and homogeneity encroach.

Tabbi focuses on the generative sweet spot - employing enough constraints for reliability while providing space for customization. Our solutions polish expression without distorting meaning by focusing AI on language refinement over content creation.

Part 1: Unraveling Common Language Misunderstandings

Part 2: Decoding Cultural Differences

Part 3: Essential Strategies for Global Professionals in Foreign Environments

Thriving in a global setting involves a delicate balance between adapting to new cultures and maintaining your own professional and cultural identity. Here are a few tactics that might help you succeed in foreign environments.

1. Develop “Cultural Intelligence” and Self-Awareness

Learn and respect cultural norms: Learn about the norms and values of the countries you're working with, and also be aware of your own cultural biases and preferences.

Reflect on your own identity: Understand how your cultural background shapes your professional interactions and be mindful of how it influences your perceptions.

2. Use skillful communication tactics appropriate for the situation

Use clear and simple language: While it's important to adapt your language to different cultural contexts, ensure that your message remains clear to avoid any miscommunications. Use technology to enhance your communications but stay authentic.

Clarification techniques: If you don’t understand something, it’s better to clarify, rather than pretend you understand. Learn phrases to ask for clarification without interrupting the flow of conversation, like “Could you please elaborate on that?”

Paraphrasing for understanding: After hearing complex instructions or discussions, paraphrase them back to the speaker to ensure your understanding is correct.

Observe body language: Pay attention to non-verbal cues which can often give context to what is being said.

Tailored Benefits for Non-Native Speakers

As a non-native English speaker, I understand the challenges of learning a new language. ChatGPT, though versatile, isn't specifically designed for non-native speakers. It requires users to know the right questions to ask. Tabbi AI, however, is crafted to meet these unique challenges, offering prompt selections that are like a secret recipe for perfect language skills. This approach not only saves time but also guarantees relevant and high-quality output.

Progress Tracking for Continuous Improvement

Tabbi AI offers more than just real-time corrections — it tracks your linguistic progress. Focused on enhancing the communication skills of non-native speakers, Tabbi AI uses your input to bolster your learning. Currently, it is developing tools like quizzes and communication analysis reports to further enhance your language skills.

The Unique 'Talk' Feature

Many non-native speakers, proficient in writing, often struggle with speaking. Tabbi AI's 'Talk' feature is designed to address this. It aids in preparing for important conversations, be it interviews, presentations, or casual small talk. The 'Talk' feature identifies pronunciation challenges and offers corrections. Future enhancements, including voice recording and comparison analysis, will enable you to compare your speech with that of native speakers, providing deeper insights into your speaking abilities.

Looking to the Future

At Tabbi AI, we are committed to bridging the communication gap faced by non-native speakers, which can affect performance, acceptance, and access to opportunities. Our goal is to empower you to communicate in your second language as fluently as in your first, helping you achieve your dreams and seize opportunities. Stay tuned as we continue to innovate and support your journey towards language mastery.

Whenever a wide range of content offerings is available, a platform for easy user selection becomes essential. This applies to various aspects of life, such as food in grocery stores, iPhone apps in the app store, movies on Netflix, and more. Specifically, software companies provide platforms for content developers (so-called "creators") to offer their products in organized ways. This made me contemplate how much of life now revolves around selecting what we want and need from a vast array of options. Almost every type of digital product now has more creative offerings than an individual can possibly try. Consequently, the associated marketplace must determine the optimal way to present that content.

Software Feature Abundance

A similar phenomenon is now occurring in the realm of individual software features. It has become easier to develop new features for an application, but more challenging to determine whether they should be included and how to effectively present them. Consequently, specialized apps are facing a miniature version of the issue that curators in other fields encounter with ubiquitous content. This problem is already evident in programs like Microsoft Word and Adobe Photoshop, which contain numerous tools and subtools that users often overlook. The proliferation of features will become a challenge that every product must confront, thanks to the advent of generative AI.

Personalizing News Content

News providers offer a prime example of a field that has grappled with the issue of overwhelming content. How does this impact content curation on platforms like YouTube and the New York Times?

Last week, I made the decision to embark on a personal news detox. I had been closely following the FTX trial and the Trump indictments, immersing myself in articles and YouTube videos on these subjects for the past few months. At some point, I realized that the value I was gaining from this time investment was minimal, if not negative. As a result, I decided to limit my consumption of news regarding FTX and electoral politics for an indefinite period. YouTube, naturally, had taken note of my months of intense interest in these topics and had been presenting an increasing amount of related (though sometimes low-quality) content. The New York Times, my other primary news source, also covered SBF and Trump on a daily basis.

On YouTube, I made a deliberate effort to avoid clicking on any of the numerous videos offered on either topic. Impressively, within a day or so, my feed shifted its focus. It began showcasing new and diverse content to fill the void. YouTube, with its millions of daily videos, employs AI to analyze my usage patterns and adapt accordingly. The task of curating content has been automated through the use of an algorithm. Given the scale of YouTube, this would have been impossible for a human to accomplish.

In contrast, the front page of the New York Times appears to be curated by humans without any analysis of user behavior. It resembles a meticulously prepared meal, where each day a human selects the ingredients, quantities, and presentation, which remain consistent for all readers. Unfortunately, this can be frustrating for some of us. Every day, the front page includes a sports section, akin to a chef serving a cilantro dish on my plate day after day. I often find myself scrolling past the content on the main page. Of course, this deliberate decision by the Times is well-thought-out. They could personalize my view, but they prioritize consistency. Perhaps there is some minimal personalization, but it is not the primary focus. Consequently, as my interests change, I find myself scrolling past even more content and visiting their front page less frequently.

Software as Curated Feature Collections

As we develop the tools for Tabbi AI, I have been contemplating the conception, design, and deployment of software features. We have an abundance of ideas, far more than we can currently include, and we do build more than we choose to release. Recent advancements in generative AI have presented us with numerous possibilities that can be seamlessly integrated into a product. How can a product manager make such a multitude of choices? Moreover, Tabbi is a tool designed to assist non-native English speakers worldwide, encompassing a broad range of use cases across diverse cultures. Which collection of features would be ideal? For example, should we include text summarization? Should we provide support for image analysis? Should we accommodate multiple languages? Should we incorporate special modes for technical language, legal matters, or medical purposes? How about a feature for composing letters to landlords?

Making Feature Presentation Decisions

Soon, software experience may closely resemble that provided by the YouTube algorithm. Products will offer users an extensive array of options, with the presentation automatically optimized for each individual. Once a product manager takes into account the various use cases and user preferences, they have a range of experience goals to choose from. This spectrum ranges from minimalistic product design to carefully curated features, from consistent abundance to user customization, and finally to fully automated curation. The decision ultimately depends on both the target customers and the product vision. While Emacs users would not want their editor's feature set to change magically, iPhone users embrace random enhancements, whether curated by Apple employees or surfaced by an enigmatic AI.

Software Development is Becoming Easier

Despite the ongoing criticism and debate surrounding proper software development methodologies, it is undeniable that code modularity and industry maturity have enabled even average developers to quickly build features. With the emergence of generative AI, software experiences can now be enhanced more swiftly, cost-effectively, and potentially with greater value. Therefore, it is possible, and perhaps necessary, for software product management to resemble YouTube's content curation, where software product features are seamlessly added to the vast array of options, guided by an AI that exposes them to users based on their explicit or inferred preferences. This would eliminate the considerable amount of time product managers currently spend/waste on considering and debating feature delivery priority, prominence, and visibility.

Existing Products with Tool Abundance

Of course, specialized tools in drawing and coding software, as well as editing tools in products like Word and Google Docs, already have this problem. The available choices are organized into multiple tabs and layers, with menus and submenus. It can be challenging to remember where the specific formatting tool that properly underlines a certain type of text is located. We have become accustomed to using only a small fraction of the options we have discovered much less than exist in the tool. These systems clearly indicate that there is a need for assistive technology that groups and presents features based on user profiling and behavioral analysis. So why is this not done more frequently?

Automating feature access presents clear challenges and tradeoffs. The goal of building software features that can be independently mixed and matched is valuable but difficult. Developers aim to create features and make them available in a "feature pot" from which the system can automatically select and present. However, many features require compatibility with existing and future features, which necessitates careful design by product managers. To achieve automated feature mixing, we need guidelines and standardized interfaces to ensure that new features meet the criteria for inclusion in the feature catalog. As a result, users can experience the subset of features they prefer. This concept is similar to how copy and paste was invented as a common idiom in computer use, designed to seamlessly integrate with existing and future text features. Companies that can develop features independently while maintaining compatibility will gain a significant advantage. Enabling flexible feature mixing poses an important challenge for future software product development.

AI vs User-Managed Configurations

When using YouTube, I could have manually added filters to exclude videos on topics I wanted to avoid. However, I am aware that there are patterns in my interests that I cannot express, and I do not have the time to delve into a complex system of configurations or a deep tree of topic preferences. YouTube's algorithm can surely decipher these preferences more accurately than I ever could.

A Shift in Design Sensibility

When software allows extensive user configuration and personalization, designers face the challenge of effectively communicating brand identity and vision. If users mix and match features from a wide menu, the essence of the product can become diluted. A simple list of feature choices fails to convey a consistent vision. Similarly, some restaurants offer a multitude of menu options with no unified flavor, while others limit the menu to convey a clear style. Designers in all fields will need to shift their perspective as software features become highly customizable. To maintain brand identity amidst unpredictable feature combinations, designers must find innovative ways to infuse products with their company's sensibilities. Maintaining a coherent vision while empowering user control is a difficult yet crucial goal for designers creating personalized software experiences.

Conclusion

The ability to independently develop and automatically combine software features represents an exciting paradigm shift. YouTube's adaptive feeds demonstrate how AI-driven software, which tailors options based on user profiles and behavior, can better serve diverse audiences. Software should intuitively offer unique combinations of features that align with users' changing interests and circumstances. The task of establishing standardized development guidelines and interfaces for mix-and-match features may be challenging, but it is necessary. When executed effectively, personalized software experiences can maintain brand identity while adapting to each user's needs. I eagerly anticipate a future where software suggests features that I had never considered but prove to be perfect for my current situation. With careful design, automated feature assembly will provide customized tools for productivity, learning, and enjoyment. Software innovation must embrace this AI-driven flexibility to create truly personalized user experiences.

Part 1: Unraveling Common Language Misunderstandings

Part 2: Decoding Cultural Differences

Part 3: Essential Strategies for Global Professionals in Foreign Environments

The global workforce is becoming increasingly diverse with the increase in remote, global hiring and cross-border collaboration. However, cultural awareness can sometimes be an afterthought in organizations. A better understanding of cultural differences can not only enhance the workplace experience but also increase productivity by preventing unnecessary conflicts and miscommunication.

Communication Style
In 'high-context' societies such as Korea, Japan, and the Middle East, where indirect expressions and non-verbal signals are the norm, the way people speak may be quite different from the straightforward, 'low-context' communication style in the U.S. or Germany. Working in global workplaces may be challenging because both styles may be present in the same organization, leading to mistrust and misunderstandings.

Hierarchy
Attitudes toward hierarchy can vary widely across cultures. Where some place great emphasis on formal titles and roles, others promote more open dialogue regardless of position. Recognizing these unspoken hierarchies is key to creating a positive and effective environment.

Conflict
Different cultures have their unique ways of handling conflict. Some tackle it directly, while others prefer a more nuanced approach that upholds group cohesion and seeks indirect resolutions. Being aware of these different methods helps us resolve conflicts more productively.

Teamwork
The collective effort is paramount in some cultures, emphasizing group performance over the individual. Other cultures, however, spotlight personal achievements. Understanding this balance is vital for fostering teamwork in a global setting.

Time Orientation
Cultures also differ in their pace of life and work. Punctuality and strict deadlines are crucial for some, whereas others operate on a more relaxed schedule. Recognizing these varying attitudes and adjusting expectations helps avoid confusion.

Work-Life Balance
Cultural perspectives on balancing work and personal life vary immensely. Whether it's the relaxed pace of a Spanish siesta or the intense work culture of the Japanese salaryman, every culture blends work and leisure differently. Respecting these differences is important for setting realistic expectations and policies for a multicultural workforce.

Uncertainty and Risk
Different cultures approach uncertainty and risk in their distinct ways. In the US, risk-taking and entrepreneurial thinking are encouraged in many companies; in Japan, organizations tend to have a more cautious and consensus-driven approach. German businesses often value precision and sustainability, meticulously analyzing potential risks and relying on robust legal frameworks to minimize uncertainty.

Feedback
Feedback can be interpreted differently across cultures. Where direct feedback might be motivating in one culture, it could be disheartening in another. Having better awareness of the preferred approach to giving and receiving feedback can make it more effective.

Etiquette
The nuances of etiquette in a global workplace are complex, with even simple greetings carrying different implications. In France, a cheek kiss, or "la bise," is a common greeting in social settings and sometimes in the workplace, while in the US or Asia, this would be considered too personal. There is an emphasis on personal space in North American countries, while in South American countries, it's common to stand closer to someone when speaking.

Takeaways
As our world grows more interconnected, understanding the nuances of cultural differences becomes essential. Taking the time to understand the intricate layers of language and cultural barriers, along with an open mindset, can help foster a genuinely international business community. It is also important to keep in mind that not everyone from a specific country will fit cultural stereotypes; we should steer clear of assumptions and strive to understand each person on an individual basis.

Over the years, I’ve realized the importance of maintaining an open mind, giving the benefit of the doubt, and seeking clarity earlier than later when you sense a misunderstanding. It’s not easy to speak up in these situations, but it helps resolve issues amicably and quickly.

Over the next few weeks, I aim to share a three-part series on communication challenges in the workplace and how to overcome them:

Part 1: Unraveling Common Language Misunderstandings

Part 2: Decoding Cultural Differences

Part 3: Essential Strategies for Global Professionals in Foreign Environments

Today, let’s dive into the first part of the series: common language misunderstandings and tips on mitigating the impact.

Language gaps non-native speakers often face are:

Idiomatic Expressions: Phrases like "hit the ground running" or "ball is in your court" may baffle non-native speakers due to their non-literal translations. Many common American idioms originate from baseball and other sports, while some older ones come from sailing, military, agriculture, and card games.

Phrasal Verbs: English is riddled with phrasal verbs such as "give up" or "look into." Altering the preposition can drastically change the meaning. For example, "run into" means to unexpectedly encounter someone or something, but if you change the preposition, "run over" can mean to hit something with a vehicle or to briefly review something; "run through" means to practice or rehearse, but it can also mean to pierce something with a sharp object.

False Friends and Cognates: Words resembling each other in two languages can have different meanings. For example, "sensible" in English denotes "reasonable," but in French, it means "sensitive”; "actual" in English means "real or existing in fact," but it means "current" or "present” in Spanish.

Formality Levels: Some languages have distinct formal and informal modes of address. Misjudging the formality level in English can lead to awkward interactions. For example, in many English-speaking countries, you generally don’t add people’s titles like “Manager Jack” or “Vice President Shekkar” when addressing them or call them “sir” or “madam/ma’am”.

Active vs Passive Voice: While some cultures prefer directness, others lean towards subtlety. In English, the active voice is more straightforward and reduces confusion. For example, “I submitted the complaint.” is clearer and sounds more confident than “The complaint was submitted (by me).”

Use of Emoticons: Emoticons might be standard in some cultures, but in English-speaking nations, they can be perceived as unprofessional, so it is best to avoid them unless you are having a casual exchange of messages.

Misunderstandings can lead non-native speakers to misinterpret conversations or tasks. It is important to seek clarity and encourage colleagues to use simpler language. However, since phrasal verbs have fewer cultural roots and may be more difficult to avoid for native speakers, it would be a worthy investment for non-native speakers to learn more of these expressions.

The onus isn't solely on non-native speakers. Native speakers also play a crucial role in promoting inclusivity in communication. Leaders can mitigate misunderstandings by providing language and cultural training, championing transparent communication, and nurturing a culture where employees feel comfortable asking for clarifications.

I’m excited to see more individuals and teams collaborating across the world with the global remote hiring trend in countries like the US. Using tools like Tabbi AI, more global professionals will be able to access opportunities previously unavailable to them; they will not only have increased access, but will also be able to excel in their roles.

From relational databases to graphical user interfaces to the Internet, each innovation has enabled new capabilities and efficiencies.

However, the emergence of artificial intelligence, especially large language models like GPT, feels qualitatively different. For the first time, we have AI systems that can generate human-like text, understand natural language, and engage in dialogue. The implications for software development are profound.

Many of the skills I've valued as an engineer - pattern recognition, algorithm design, interface design - can now be handled by AI with minimal human input. This raises questions about the future role of software developers as more tasks get automated.

At the same time, I'm incredibly excited about the potential for AI to help non-native English speakers communicate more effectively. As someone who has spent my career building tools for information discovery and understanding, the use case of assisting non-native speakers deeply resonates with me.

AI offers game-changing solutions here through transcription, translation, text generation, and dialogue agents. Tools powered by large language models can help non-native speakers compose emails, presentations, reports, and other professional communications in fluent, idiomatic English. Voice assistants can have natural, human-like conversations in both their native language and English to practice verbal skills.

For non-native speakers, mastering English is one of the biggest barriers to career advancement. But AI promises to make business communication effortless. I can't wait to explore how to best leverage these technologies to create more opportunities for non-native professionals.

We are entering an era where many repetitive tasks handled by software engineers will be automated by AI. But there are also limitless possibilities to help connect people across languages and cultures. As daunting as this transition is for engineers like myself, I'm hopeful that AI will ultimately empower more people to express themselves, be understood, and fulfill their potential.

The founders share a passion for leveling the language playing field and empowering individuals. April, Marty, and Dan each have stories and backgrounds that support a shared mission: to make people as effective in English as they have been in their primary language.

Today, we want to share the stories and values that drive us at Tabbi.

April's Story:

After being a debate champion and an award-winning writer in Korea, my life took an unexpected turn when I moved to the US. My once-celebrated communication skills had little value. I was left feeling misunderstood and insignificant. This experience ignited my desire to help people bridge the language inequality gap, to unlock the potential of millions of non-native English speakers.

Ten years ago, I founded ChattingCat, an instant English correction service powered by crowdsourced English speakers. It became popular among non-native English speakers and helped many people land their dream jobs and schools, but I had to shut it down due to a legal issue.

With the emergence of AI, it became clear that a more efficient solution was possible. I decided to embark on Tabbi, a venture that uses AI to unleash the potential of people seeking language support. I believe Tabbi has the potential to redefine and elevate global communication across languages and cultures.

Marty's Story:

My work has spanned a variety of software engineering roles, from working at an early game company to designing algorithms for business language analysis to the development of apps for video editing. Over that time, I’ve realized that as technologies change quickly, I’m most motivated by the impact and benefits the tools can have for real people.

When I heard April explain her longtime vision for a world where all people could communicate effectively in business, I was struck by how rarely the problem was addressed with real innovation. Yes, there were numerous tools for learning English, but April realized more direct solutions must be possible, and that these could scale and uplift people at all levels. Thus I was introduced to ChattingCat and then Tabbi.

For me, this would be an opportunity to apply a new technology, generative AI, to realize value almost immediately. The rate at which new ideas can be built, delivered, and improved is phenomenal. I’m excited to be part of Tabbi, a team dedicated to solving human communication problems and hopefully helping a lot of people improve their lives.

Dan's Story:

I’ve spent my whole life adapting to different cultures and languages. Since childhood, I’ve constantly experienced the challenges of speaking or writing in the appropriate way for the environment. Fortunately, language was less of an issue as the early exposure to different languages gave me a head start. Over the years, I observed many friends and colleagues struggling to not only understand the culture but also speak and write fluently. I noticed that many people were talking ‘past’ each other; they thought they were on the same page, but were misunderstanding the nuances. I often had to jump in to help clarify details or ease any tension.

When April shared Tabbi’s mission, it immediately resonated with me. I recognized the potential for Tabbi to empower non-native professionals, enabling them to confidently and effectively express their thoughts, get recognized for their true value, and capture all the opportunities they deserve. I am excited to be a part of this bold and impactful mission.

--

At Tabbi, we are enthusiastic about helping create a world of new opportunities, a world where language is no longer a barrier but a bridge to success. We envision professional communication enhanced by each person’s specific knowledge and unique experiences. We are driven to make an innovative service that helps individuals reach their full potential.

In this blog, the founders of Tabbi will take turns sharing their stories and knowledge. We hope you find Tabbi's blog both interesting and useful, and that we can establish a deep connection with you. We invite you to join us on this journey toward a more connected and equitable world.

Every day for 21 days, from Monday, August 21 to Sunday, September 10, write a gratitude journal (three things you're grateful for). I usually do this before I go to sleep and find something that happened that day that I'm grateful for, but you can also think of something that happened yesterday and write it down in the morning. However you do it, it's important to do it every day. (If you're not comfortable writing a full sentence, you don't need three - just one!)

(2) Get Tabbi corrections ✅

To access Tabbi correction, you have two options: either type directly on tabbi.com/write or copy and paste your English writing into tabbi.com/write.

You can use the service up to five times without creating an account. However, after that, you will need to create an account. Tabbi AI is currently available for free.

Once you click on the send icon (paper airplane), you will receive two corrected versions of your gratitude journal entry. The "Corrected" version will fix any grammatical errors, while the "Eloquent" version will provide sentences that a native American speaker would use. This will help you correct grammatical mistakes and learn new expressions.

(3) Check-in! 👍🙌

- If you have a personal blog, write a gratitude journal on your blog and share the link.

- If you don't have a blog or if you don't want to write on your blog, write in a personal note and share the Tabbi AI correction (screen capture).

- If you're concerned about revealing personal information, you can privately complete the challenge and write "August 21 (Day 1) Challenge Completed."

- Another way to check in is by sharing any new expressions you have learned or expressions you would like to remember from your gratitude journal.

The purpose of Checking In is to hold each other accountable during the challenge and draw motivation from others. So, feel free to utilize Discord in any manner that aids your success. 🍀☀️🌈✨

Good luck! Enjoy the challenge and experience increased happiness by writing a gratitude journal.
